“The difference between fiction and reality? Fiction has to make sense.” - Mark Twain

The human experience is a captivating ballet between reality, the tangible world we perceive with our senses and imagination, and the boundless realm where dreams take flight. This abstract attempts to capture the essence of this captivating interplay, where boundaries blur and possibilities shimmer.

  1. The Canvas of Reality

Our journey begins with the solid ground beneath our feet, the canvas of reality. It’s the symphony of our senses, the vibrant tapestry of colors, textures, and smells that bombard us every moment. It’s the sun’s warm caress on our skin, the gust of wind whispering through leaves, the rhythmic crash of waves against the shore. This is the world governed by the unyielding laws of physics, the stage where atoms pirouette in their eternal dance.

  1. The Flight of Fancy

But then, reality’s canvas stretches, revealing a kaleidoscope of possibilities - the realm of the imagined. It’s the playground where dragons soar through twilight skies, where cities defy gravity with impossible architecture, and where talking animals share witty repartee. It’s the whispered desires of our hearts, the ink bleeding onto the page from a writer’s pen, the melody humming in the quiet corners of a musician’s mind. This is the world unchained, unbound by the shackles of the physical, where imagination paints with the brightest, most fantastical hues.

  1. The Blurring Lines

But the line between these two realms isn’t as straight as it seems. They bleed into each other, influence each other, and create a tapestry far richer than either alone could achieve:

Reality Inspires Imagination: The wonders of the real world spark the fires of imagination. The intricate designs of nature inspire breathtaking artwork, the vastness of the cosmos fuels tales of interstellar travel, and the complexities of human emotions birth characters that leap off the page.

Imagination Shapes Reality: Our dreams become the blueprints for inventions, our stories inspire social change, and our artistic expressions hold up mirrors to the very essence of humanity. Imagination pushes the boundaries of what’s possible, paving the way for scientific breakthroughs and technological advancements.

  1. The Power of Both

Ultimately, both the real and the imagined are vital forces in our lives. The real grounds us, and gives us a sense of stability and structure. The imagined grants us wings, allows us to soar beyond the confines of the known, and opens doors to uncharted possibilities.

“Reality is often disappointing. That’s why we have books and cats.” - Ursula K. Le Guin

The Two Pillars of Existence: Benefits of Reality & Imagination

Our lives are a fascinating tapestry woven from the threads of reality and imagination. These two seemingly disparate realms offer a unique bouquet of benefits, shaping our experiences, enriching our growth, and fueling our journeys in profound ways.

The Grounding Force: Reality’s Gifts

Reality, the tangible world we perceive with our senses, serves as a steady foundation. It offers:

  • Structure and Stability: The laws of physics, the rhythm of day and night, the constants of nature - these provide a framework for our lives, giving us a sense of grounding and predictability. We can rely on the sun to rise each morning, the laws of gravity to keep us rooted, and the patterns of our environment to guide our actions.
  • Concrete Learning: Through our senses, we gather information, observe cause and effect, and test our hypotheses. By interacting with the real world, we develop critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a deep understanding of how things work. This concrete learning shapes our knowledge base and equips us to navigate the complexities of life.
  • Shared Connections: Reality binds us to each other. We witness shared events, learn from common experiences, and build relationships based on our interactions in the physical world. This shared space fosters empathy, connection, and a sense of belonging within our communities.

The Flight of Fancy: Imagination’s Treasures

But life wouldn’t be complete without the boundless wings of imagination. This fantastical realm grants us:

  • Creativity and Innovation: Imagination allows us to dream beyond the confines of the present, to envision possibilities that haven’t yet been realized. This fuels our creative pursuits, pushes us to innovate, and inspires us to break free from the limitations of the known. From artistic masterpieces to scientific breakthroughs, imagination has been the driving force behind humanity’s greatest achievements.
  • Emotional Resilience and Coping: When faced with challenges, our imagination can become a safe haven. We can create stories of triumph, build up inner strength, and find solace in fantastical escapes. This emotional resilience empowers us to bounce back from adversity, find the silver lining in difficult situations, and maintain a positive outlook.
  • Exploration and Self-Discovery: Through imagination, we can step outside ourselves, explore uncharted territories, and experiment with different identities. This introspection fuels personal growth, allows us to understand our desires and fears, and guides us on the path of self-discovery.

The Synergy of Two Worlds:

The true magic lies not in choosing one over the other, but in embracing the powerful synergy of both reality and imagination. They intertwine and build upon each other, creating a rich tapestry of experience:

  • Reality inspires imagination: The wonders of the natural world spark creativity, the complexities of human relationships fuel storytelling, and the challenges we face ignite the desire to dream of better solutions.
  • Imagination shapes reality: Our dreams become blueprints for action, our stories inspire social change, and our artistic expressions hold up mirrors to society, shaping the world around us and pushing it towards a brighter future.

Embrace the Dance:

Don’t be afraid to dance between the tangible and the fantastical. Let reality ground you, provide structure, and teach you the ropes. Let your imagination soar, explore infinite possibilities, and paint your own vibrant masterpiece on the canvas of life. In the end, it’s the harmonious interplay of these two forces that makes our journey truly remarkable.

So, step into the light, embrace the shadows, and remember: both reality and imagination are yours to wield. Use them wisely, cherish their gifts, and paint your life with the most breathtaking colors you can imagine.

The human experience pulsates with the interplay of reality, the tangible world we perceive, and imagination, the boundless realm of dreams and possibilities. But where do these fundamental concepts originate? How do different cultures across the globe weave their own unique threads into the tapestry of reality and imagination? Let’s embark on a fascinating journey across diverse perspectives, exploring the origins of these captivating forces.

The Deep Roots of Reality:

  • Innate Perception: Across cultures, the foundations of reality arise from our core sensory experiences. Sight, touch, smell, taste, and hearing paint the canvas of our immediate world, shaping our understanding of what’s “real.” From the rhythmic crash of waves against a Maori warrior’s canoe to the earthy scent of sun-baked clay under an African weaver’s fingers, each cultural context adds its own brushstrokes to the perception of reality.

  • Mythology and Legends: Many cultures weave elaborate narratives to explain the origins and workings of the universe. Greek myths, for instance, personified natural forces like thunder and fire, giving them tangible forms and stories. Similarly, the Hindu creation myth narrates the unfolding of the cosmos from Brahma, the divine creator. These narratives not only solidify the perception of reality but also imbue it with meaning and purpose.

  • Rituals and Practices: Cultural practices often serve as anchors to reality, connecting individuals to their environment and each other. From daily prayers under the open sky in Islamic cultures to the intricate tea ceremonies in Japan, rituals reinforce the shared understanding of the physical world and our place within it.

The Soaring Flight of Imagination:

  • Dreams and Visions: Across cultures, dreams hold powerful sway over the realm of imagination. Shamans in indigenous cultures, for instance, often interpret dreams as messages from the spirit world, blurring the lines between reality and the fantastical. Similarly, Sufi mystics in the Islamic world seek spiritual wisdom through dreams and visions.

  • Art and Storytelling: Human creativity explodes in countless forms of art and storytelling, giving life to fantastical beings, imaginary worlds, and alternate realities. The vibrant myths of the Maori people, for instance, teem with mythical creatures like taniwha (dragons) and patupaiarehe (fairies). Similarly, Japanese anime and manga transport viewers to worlds of robots, talking animals, and boundless imagination.

  • The Power of Metaphors and Symbols: Many cultures employ metaphors and symbols to bridge the gap between the concrete and the abstract, translating complex realities into relatable imagery. The Yin and Yang symbol in Chinese culture, for instance, represents the duality of opposing forces within a unified whole, offering a lens to understand the interplay of light and shadow, good and evil, in the very fabric of reality.

The Intertwined Threads:

It’s crucial to remember that reality and imagination are not isolated realms but rather intricate tapestries woven with threads from both spheres. Cultural narratives shape our perception of the world, while our lived experiences influence the stories we tell. Dreams inspire artistic creations, and artistic expressions influence our understanding of the universe.

This beautiful interplay is evident in everyday life. A Navajo weaver might draw inspiration from the starry constellations overhead to create intricate patterns on rugs, grounding celestial imagination in the tangible form of textiles. Similarly, a Buddhist monk might find solace in the calming rhythm of his breath, bridging the gap between the physical act of breathing and the vast metaphysical concept of interconnectedness.

Embracing the Kaleidoscope:

As we delve deeper into diverse cultural perspectives, we realize that the origins of reality and imagination are not singular, but rather kaleidoscopic. Each culture adds its own unique colors, patterns, and textures to this mesmerizing dance, enriching our understanding of both the tangible and the fantastical.

The Grounding Pillars of Reality:

  • Tangibility and Certainty: Reality anchors us in the physical world, a realm governed by unyielding laws. Gravity keeps us rooted, the sun dictates the rhythm of our days, and the laws of physics define the parameters of our actions. This sense of tangibility and certainty provides a sturdy foundation for our lives, allowing us to plan, predict, and build upon known foundations.

  • Objectivity and Shared Experience: The world we perceive through our senses is observable, measurable, and often shared by others. From the vibrant colors of a sunset to the rhythmic crash of waves on the shore, reality offers a common ground for communication, collaboration, and building shared understanding. This objectivity allows us to connect with others, learn from common experiences, and navigate the world together.

  • Logical Causality and Predictability: The laws of physics dictate a cause-and-effect relationship within reality. Actions have consequences, events unfold in a discernible sequence, and patterns emerge from predictable behavior. This logical causality allows us to learn from experience, make informed decisions, and anticipate the outcomes of our actions within the physical world.

The Wings of Imagination:

  • Subjectivity and Limitlessness: Imagination soars beyond the confines of the known, embracing a boundless realm where anything is possible. Here, dragons take flight, mountains float in the sky, and talking animals share witty repartee. This subjectivity allows us to explore countless possibilities, unconstrained by the limitations of the physical world.

  • Creative Expression and Innovation: Imagination fuels our creative pursuits, pushing us to invent, express, and explore. From breathtaking works of art to revolutionary technological advancements, the seeds of innovation often blossom in the fertile ground of our imagination. This creative expression expands our horizons, enriches our lives, and shapes the world around us.

  • Emotional Resilience and Coping: When faced with challenges, our imagination can become a safe haven. We can create stories of triumph, envision better futures, and find solace in fantastical escapes. This emotional resilience empowers us to face adversity, bounce back from setbacks, and maintain a positive outlook.

Embrace the Harmony:

Living a fulfilling life requires embracing both the guiding lights of reality and the wings of imagination. Let reality ground you, provide structure, and teach you the ropes. Let your imagination soar, explore infinite possibilities, and paint your own vibrant masterpiece on the canvas of life. In the end, it’s the harmonious interplay of these two forces that makes our journey truly remarkable.

Virtual reality

  • Virtual reality (VR) glasses have been making waves in the technology world, promising to revolutionize the way we experience reality. With the ability to transport us to new worlds, whether it’s exploring a virtual museum, taking a virtual tour of a foreign country, or attending a virtual concert, VR glasses allow us to experience things that would be impossible or impractical in the real world. Enhance our senses, for example, VR glasses can simulate the sensation of flying, allowing us to experience the thrill of flight without ever leaving the ground. They can also simulate the sensation of weightlessness, allowing us to experience what it’s like to be in space. Change the way we interact with others. Virtual reality can allow us to connect with people from all over the world, regardless of our physical location. This can be especially beneficial for people who are isolated or have difficulty connecting with others in the real world. VR glasses have the potential to be a game-changer for reality as we know it.

“I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I intended to be.” - Douglas Adams

Vlad: “Hello, What can I do for you today?”

Client: “I’ve got an issue. I can’t distinguish something that’s happened and what I imagined.”

Vlad: “So you can’t say if you’re living in the city or countryside in a big mansion and your chofer drives you here?”

Client: “No, no. It’s not like that. I work for myself and know what’s real. It’s more about how I went on a vacation in India. I met wonderful people and took pictures and when I came back I was reading novels with an Indian background and I felt I had been in the settings and experienced some of the events. After checking the photos and itinerary of my trip I realized that I had never been to this location and my journal doesn’t mention the experience that I have felt. I asked as well as friends and they have no recollection of those events.”

Vlad: “Have you had similar experiences before?”

Client: “Well. Sometimes when I am reading the book I can really identify with a character.”

Vlad: “Ok. That’s common. I would like to ask you to think about your journey today to my office and the path you have chosen. You have chosen some deviations and not others. So I want to think about real experience and imagine what could you have done. Notice the diferences. Which of those two representations is sharper, closer, surrounding you? What about sounds?”

Client: “I am very good at imagining and I haven’t realized before that real experience surrounds me and I can feel my feet on the ground. Imaginary experience is in front of me and somehow I am floating. I notice a difference in sound as well. Real experience has surround sound while in imagination I hear myself and the thing I focus on.”

Vlad: “I would like you to go back to your imaginative memory in India and notice the structure of your experience. Specifically ground underneath your feet, surround and sounds.”

Client: “It is almost real and I now know there is a difference. I can’t really capture the whole experience as in the real one as I don’t have all the data. Thanks for helping me to clarify.”

Vlad: “If you allow me I present here Wholeness work as a tool to connect to your deep inside when you need it. The first session will take about 30 minutes and with every practice you’ll do it better, easier, faster, and with more elegance.”

Client: “Ok. Let’s go for it.”

  1. Feel the Earth Beneath You: Sit comfortably, spine straight, feet planted firmly on the ground. Feel the solidity of the earth beneath you, an unwavering anchor connecting you to the physical world. Imagine roots sprouting from your feet, extending deep into the soil, drawing strength and stability from the Earth’s core.

  2. Breathe with Deep Awareness: Breathe slowly and deeply, focusing on the sensation of air entering and leaving your lungs. Since the rhythm of your breath, the coolness on inhalation, the warmth on exhalation. This simple act of mindful breathing connects you to the present moment, grounding you in the reality of your physical existence.

  3. Open Your Senses: Pay attention to the subtle symphony of your surroundings. The whisper of leaves rustling in the breeze, the chirping of birds, the distant hum of traffic. The impossible becomes possible, boundaries dissolve, and you are the architect of your own fantastical journey.

  3. Meet Your Imagination Guide: Within this world, encounter a figure who embodies the essence of your imagination. It could be a wise animal, a mythical creature, or even an aspect of yourself. Ask this guide questions, seek wisdom, and explore the hidden corners of your inner landscape.

Reuniting in Harmony:

  1. Gently Return: When you feel ready, slowly draw yourself back through the doorway, carrying the insights and energy of your imaginary journey with you. Return to the present moment, feeling the earth beneath your feet, the air filling your lungs.

  2. Integrate the Experience: Reflect on the emotions, insights, and lessons you gained from your inner journey. How do they relate to your current reality? What can you bring back to your daily life from your explorations in the realm of imagination?

  3. Weave the Tapestry: Remember, reality and imagination are not opposing forces, but complementary threads in the tapestry of your existence. Use the grounding stability of reality as a foundation, and let your imagination weave vibrant colors and unique patterns into your life.

This meditation is just a starting point. As you practice, your inner landscapes will unfold, revealing new depths and possibilities. Embrace the dance between reality and imagination, allow each to nourish and inspire you, and witness the beautiful tapestry of your being come to life.

“I always wanted to be someone, but I guess I can’t make up my mind.” - Woody Allen

  • I have read books, watched videos, attended seminars, and practiced on myself and others. I have learned to distinguish the level of certainty about the future derived from sensation. My opinion is that “Our mind and body are encoding, comparing and evaluating continuous stream of incoming data. Learning how to consciously access, change, and save settings is a journey.” I’ve got VR glasses Oculus Quest 2, I have experienced since 1994 in Blackpool virtual reality rides. I follow what my mom had taught me and pinch my arm if I want to be sure that I am awake. I have learned to practice and practice and practice till I get responses without thinking. And then still practice some more. I do recommend that you search for a practitioner who has knowledge, skills, experience, and elegance for your first session.

To conclude the fascinating dance between reality and imagination is to deny their very essence. They are not chapters in a book, with defined beginnings and endings, but rather an eternal waltz, forever intertwined and eternally evolving.

The Paradox of Duality:

To declare one victorious over the other is to miss the point entirely. It’s like claiming the stars outshine the earth, or the firefly loses its magic in the daylight. Both reality and imagination hold their own intrinsic power, weaving a richer tapestry when embraced in unison.

Reality, the Grounding Force:

Offers structure, anchors us in the physical world and provides a canvas for our actions. It teaches us logic, consequence, and the interconnectedness of all things. Without its firm embrace, our dreams would lack grounding, our flights of fancy untethered and directionless.

Imagination, the Soaring Wings:

Ignites creativity, fuels innovation, and allows us to dream beyond the horizon. It offers solace, resilience, and the power to reshape our perspectives. Without its boundless flight, our lives would be drab landscapes, devoid of color and possibility.

The Intertwined Dance:

The true conclusion lies not in separation but in the dynamic interplay between these two forces. The artist’s brush dips into reality’s palette yet gives birth to creatures of imagination. The scientist’s logic builds upon the foundations of the tangible, yet dreams fuel their inventions. The mystic seeks truth in the depths of both, blurring the lines between the seen and the unseen.

A Tapestry Ever-Unfolding:

Our journey is not about reaching a definitive conclusion, but about embracing the dance itself. Let reality be the ground beneath your feet, granting you stability and strength. And let imagination be the wings upon your back, lifting you to explore uncharted territories.

So, keep dancing, friend. Keep painting your unique tapestry with the vibrant hues of both the real and the imagined. For in the embrace of this beautiful duality lies the most fulfilling expression of life itself.

Remember, reality or imagination isn’t a destination, but an endless journey. Keep exploring, keep creating, and keep weaving your own breathtaking tapestry with every single step.
